Proteomic and Phosphoproteomic Profiling Reveals Alterations in Essential Structural Proteins of Human Sural Nerves Affected by Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of diabetes characterized by a length-dependent axonopathy that causes pain, weakness, and sensory loss. Despite its high prevalence, the molecular mechanisms driving axonal degeneration in DPN are not fully understood. To better define the molecular changes associated with DPN, we performed proteomic characterization of human sural nerve tissue. Our proteomic characterization study revealed alterations in essential structural proteins that may compromise the capacity of the sural nerve to maintain axonal integrity and regenerate after injury.
