About this event

Professional photographers tend to be divided about light meters. Some people love them while others feel there’s no longer a need for them. The thinking is that digital cameras allow photographers to instantly see images and fine tune adjustments making light meters obsolete.

This assumes one point – the function of a handheld incident light meter is to provide camera settings for exposure. While this is true, the handheld incident light meter can do so much more.

In this presentation and demonstration, we will learn about how to use a handheld incident light meter to accomplish the following:

· Functions and modes of the handheld light meter

· Using the handheld light meter for ambient (available light) exposure

· Understanding use of the handheld light meter to improve image contrast and accurately dial in lighting ratios

· Using the handheld light meter for flash photography

· Understanding use of the handheld light meter for blended ambient plus flash exposures including how to set lighting ratios in blended ambient/flash situations

· Using the handheld incident light meter to determine predominant light direction

· Using the handheld incident light meter for special situations including light white backgrounds, black backgrounds, kickers and silhouettes

· Determining if exposure values across a scene are consistent and how to remedy

· Setting multiple exposure values across a scene consistently and reliably

This class is oriented for beginner to advanced photographers. Feel free to bring a handheld light meter if you have one.
