Endometriosis Pain is Driven by Distinct Anatomical and Molecular
Populations of Dorsal Root Ganglia Neurons
Endometriosis affects at least 10% of individuals born with a uterus and is defined by the presence of ectopic uterine-like tissue. The cardinal symptoms are infertility and pain, the latter of which is incompletely understood and poorly treated. Using a non-surgical mouse model of endometriosis, we identified key anatomical and molecular populations of DRG neurons that contribute to endometriosis pain. Whole cell patch clamp electrophysiology of DRG neurons revealed a thoracolumbar specific depolarized state in endometriosis mice. Behavior experiments and further molecular characterization point towards prostaglandin E2 signaling through the EP1 receptor as a potential driver of this sensitivity.
